A groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed for a massive RM1.3 billion student housing project in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. The project will see the construction of 1,610 apartment units, providing accommodation for up to 6,732 local and international students, as well as staff of the medical faculty at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).

A total of 1,610 apartment units will be built to accommodate up to 6,732 local and international students as well as staff of the medical faculty of Universiti Malaysia Sabah ( UMS ) here. The memorandum of understanding for the RM1.3billion project was signed between the land owner Sabah Islamic Religious Council (MUIS) and developer Zecon Berhad at a ceremony held at the Sabah International Convention Centre, on Tuesday (Jan 21).

State Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif who represented Chief Minister Datuk Hajiji Noor witnessed the MOU signing. Under the MOU, the student housing project involving a Gross Development Value (GDV) amounting to RM1.3billion, the 8hectare land adjacent to the UMS Medical Faculty will be developed. The land ownership will continue to remain under MUIS under the Build, Lease, Maintain & Transfer (BLMT) development project. The project is seen as a pioneering modern and comprehensive development project that is expected to begin by the end of 2025. The project also expects to create about 500 to 600 job opportunities including professionals, administration and labour, according to a statement released with the signing of the MOU.MUIS president Datuk Seri Yahya Hussin and MUIS secretary cum chief executive officer Ramlan Awang signed on behalf MUIS while Zecon was represented by its group managing director cum chief executive officer Datuk Zainal Abidin Ahmad and Zecon Engineering Sabah Sdn.Bhd chairman Datuk Abdul Kadir Rosline
