Workers on the North East Link tunnels will earn between $11,000 to $12,000 a fortnight, among the highest rates in the country.
The record deal between Australian Workers Union and the Spark construction group was approved by the Fair Work Commission and surpassed hefty pay for workers on the West Gate Tunnel.
They will also pocket $53 a day travel allowance, $10.35 an hour special site allowance and up to $785 a week for living away from home, perks often enjoyed by mining and offshore workers. It means that workers on the $18 billion tunnels easing congestion in Melbourne’s North East will earn between $11,000 and $12,000 a fortnight, or $280,000 to $320,000 a year.
The AWU confirmed the rates were the highest in the country, but said they recognised the dangerous nature of the work in tunnels that were up to 60 metres below the ground.
