Police in Malaysia have launched an investigation into a protest and hunger strike staged outside Sungai Buloh Prison by families of individuals detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 ( Sosma ). The demonstration took place yesterday morning, involving approximately 40 to 50 people, including children, who gathered holding banners.

Sungai Buloh District Police Chief, Supt Mohd Hafiz Muhammad Nor, stated that the gathering was organized by families of Sosma detainees demanding the government abolish the act. Some protesters are believed to have family members currently detained at Sungai Buloh Prison under Sosma. The police have initiated an investigation under Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, with the aim of identifying individuals involved in the gathering for questioning.Mohd Hafiz also informed that the organizers of the event could face a fine of up to RM10,000 if they failed to submit a notice to the police regarding the gathering. The police are urging the public with any information about the incident to contact the investigating officer, Insp Nurliyana Shariffuddin, at 010-8435654 or visit the nearest police station. Media reports yesterday highlighted that several family members of Sosma detainees had begun a hunger strike outside Sungai Buloh Prison in protest after their visitation requests were denied.
