Police charged Calvin Lee Waller, Jr., 48, with homicide on Dec. 2 in connection with the beating death of Jeffrey Keckler, 61, whose body had been hidden in a stairwell.

Keckler’s body was discovered Nov. 28 under a locked hatch covering basement stairs at Waller’s apartment building at 117 Locust Street. Keckler’s body could have been hidden there since Nov. 9, the date Keckler was last seen alive. The murder weapon was a claw hammer, according to court records. Police found a wooden-handled claw hammer with blood spatter on it in Waller’s kitchen, according to court records. Investigators also found blood spatter on the bedroom wall in Waller’s apartment as well as a “large amount of apparent blood” in the bedroom area around and on the bed.
