The Community Check-Up Center has quietly served residents out of a Hall Manor home for nearly 30 years. 'We never turn them away,' she said of patients who need medical help.
The Community Check-Up Center in Harrisburg is looking to renovate a new building that will feature more functional space, additional services, and attract new patients. Image by Zahriah Balentine | pennlive.comThe Community Check-Up Center in Hall Manor has offered medical services to tens of thousands of low-income families for nearly 30 years. But the nonprofit hasn’t been able to shake off financial hits from the pandemic even as demand for its services has increased.
Expanding to a nearby building located on Randolph Street near Foose Elementary School will help the center to respond to the increasing needs of the community, according to Holly Leggett, board president. “It’ll be easier for people to find, there’s more parking, and people who live here can walk over there because it’s still in the neighborhood,” said Leggett. “If UMPC, Penn State, or Hamilton Health wants to reach some of our patients that are here they can use that facility as well.”
“Everything is different now, since COVID is over our funders look at things differently,” Leggett said. “Our patients have a different concept of dependent care they need, and most of all, we have issues trying to find providers, nurse practitioners, medical assistants, and doctors ... it’s hard.
“The grants from foundations that we typically have gotten funds from in the past have been stretched so thin,” she said, that some can no longer help fund their mission, even though they support it.
