Following a viral video alleging harassment of tourists, the Kota Kinabalu City Mosque will introduce standard uniforms for staff, mandatory customer service training, and a dedicated public toilet for visitors.
The Kota Kinabalu City Mosque is set to implement new measures following a viral video that sparked controversy over alleged harassment of tourists. State Tourism, Culture, and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew announced immediate steps to improve the experience for visitors, including the introduction of standard uniforms for mosque staff and mandatory customer service training .
All front-line personnel will be required to wear these uniforms to ensure easy identification and accessibility for visitors. Additionally, plans are underway to construct a dedicated public toilet for tourists. These measures aim to enhance safety, service quality, and adherence to tourism regulations.Last week, a video shared by a Chinese-speaking tourist went viral, alleging that tourists were harassed at the mosque. The video depicted individuals stopping tourists, making threatening gestures, and demanding fees for taking photos outside the mosque. The Kota Kinabalu City Mosque, with its iconic blue dome situated on a lagoon at Likas Bay, is a popular tourist destination. The Sabah Tourism Board (STB), through its Industrial Support Committee (ISC), convened a meeting with the mosque's Tourism Management Team on January 28 to address the incident. Liew stated that the ministry will implement revised standard operating procedures to improve visitor management at the mosque, particularly concerning e-hailing service providers. The STB will collaborate with e-hailing companies to establish proper drop-off and pick-up protocols. Discussions are also underway with the Public Works Department (JKR) regarding a designated drop-off zone for tour buses to optimize traffic flow and visitor convenience.
