The Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) has denied involvement in the alleged harassment of tourists captured in a viral video filmed in front of Masjid Bandaraya. The Mayor stated that DBKK staff were not involved in the incident and called for the mosque management to address the situation.

The Kota Kinabalu City Hall ( DBKK ) has refuted claims that its staff harassed a group of tourists in front of Masjid Bandaraya , as depicted in a recent viral video. Mayor Datuk Seri Sabin Samitah stated that, to his knowledge, DBKK personnel have never obstructed tourists from photographing the mosque. He emphasized that DBKK staff are not identifiable in the video, as the individual involved was not wearing any City Hall-branded attire.

Sabin directed the mosque management to address the situation, ensuring it does not deter tourists from visiting the city and safeguarding the safety of visitors parking on adjacent roadways. He spoke to reporters after officiating the 25th Silver Jubilee Celebration of Kota Kinabalu city on Sunday. Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) vice president Junz Wong, who initially shared the video on his Facebook page, urged relevant ministries and authorities to take decisive action against any misconduct by tourism-related workers in the region. He stressed the importance of training these individuals to treat tourists with courtesy and respect.Wong expressed concern that such incidents tarnish Sabah's tourism image and hinder its growth. This marks the second such incident involving tourists and Masjid Bandaraya staff. Earlier in January, Sabah exco for religious affairs Datuk Dr Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif addressed another viral video depicting tourists allegedly being charged for taking pictures at the iconic mosque. He pledged to gather more information from the Sabah Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JHEAINS) director before commenting further, but underscored that such incidents at mosques are unacceptable. He emphasized that all worshippers and guests, including tourists, should be treated with kindness and respect by the mosque management
