The Department of National Unity and Integration (JPNIN) has revealed that five percent of the 8,529 registered neighborhood watch areas ( KRT ) nationwide are inactive. Datuk Seri Hasnol Zam Zam Ahmad, Secretary-general of the National Unity Ministry, emphasized the need to revitalize these inactive KRT s to strengthen community unity initiatives. He stressed that fostering unity is an ongoing process requiring active participation from all KRT s.
To tackle this issue, the ministry plans to investigate the reasons behind their inactivity, exploring factors like financial constraints, leadership challenges, or other underlying problems. Hasnol Zam Zam explained that establishing a KRT in urban areas typically requires 1,000 to 1,500 residents, while in rural areas, a minimum of 500 residents is sufficient. The ministry's objective is to ensure all registered KRTs remain active and progress to 'Progressive KRT' status. He highlighted this during the launch of the 'Jom Ronda Bersepadu' voluntary patrol scheme (SRS) and the 'One Family, One SRS Member' campaign, organized by the Taman Chepor Raya KRT. The event was attended by JPNIN director-general Datuk Che Roslan Che Daud and Perak National Unity Department director Mansor Mohd Hashim. Hasnol Zam Zam further elaborated that currently, 5,431 active SRS units operate within 8,529 KRTs nationwide, with nearly 100,000 members involved. Perak boasts 591 registered KRTs, with 424 having active SRS teams. He emphasized the resurgence of SRS, reaffirming its crucial role at the community level. He also noted a notable increase in youth involvement, stating that unlike in the past, the younger generation now holds specific roles within the KRT. The government, Hasnol Zam Zam added, prioritizes the national unity agenda, with KRTs serving as key agents in raising public awareness
