Water Supply Disruptions in Sandakan: Department Addresses Issues in Several Areas

The Water Department is working to resolve ongoing water supply problems in Sandakan, affecting residential and commercial users in several areas. Repairs to damaged pipes and issues at the Bukit Garam Water Treatment Plant are contributing to the disruptions. The department is monitoring the situation and conducting repairs to restore water supply.

The Water Department is closely monitoring the situation in parts of Sandakan to address the erratic water supply experienced by several residential and commercial users in Batu Tiga Setengah and Jalan Utara over the past few days. A spokesperson for the department stated that damage to separate distribution pipes supplying Taman Melrose and Bandar Melrose was a contributing factor to the problem. Both pipes are 150mm in diameter and of the Mid-Steel-Cement Lined (MSCL) type.

The broken pipe in the residential area involved a pipe-crossing. A backhoe was used to dig a trench so that our team could access the pipe, they said, adding that five to six department technicians were present to repair the pipe as soon as the leak was detected on Tuesday. This work was complicated because the affected part of the pipe was buried under the embankment of the area. In the case of Bandar Melrose, the broken pipe was located outside a premise in a commercial center. We knew about the leak earlier, but discussions on site between the premise owner and staff prevented the department from repairing the damage immediately, the spokesperson said. However, the repair work on both MSCL pipes was successfully completed late Tuesday evening, and users in the residential areas and business premises gradually received water supply as the pressure in the distribution line was sufficient. The spokesperson added that this was not the first time a main pipe in Bandar Melrose had broken this month. The previous incident occurred on another unit last week, they added. In addition to the leaks, a decrease in production from the Bukit Garam Water Treatment Plant also affected the water supply to Taman Melrose and Bandar Melrose. Production was halted for several hours yesterday to allow for repairs to the raw water pump at the plant, they explained. Under normal conditions, the plant produces approximately 30 million liters of treated water daily.\The department issued a notice on Wednesday at 1:30 pm, which was disseminated on social media, to inform users in several areas of Sandakan and Kinabatangan to prepare for temporary disruptions. Among the affected residential areas were Taman Villa Vista, Taman Seri Labuk, Taman Mawar, Taman Ramin, Taman Sibuga, Taman Sentosa, Taman Chrysanthemum, Taman Melanta, and Taman Poh Hing. Rural communities such as Kampung (Kg) Segaliud, Kg Garinono, Kg Ulu Dusun, Kg Kitagas, Kg Lung Pagung, Kg Sungai Kapor, Kg Sungai Tiram, Kg Rosalinda, Kg Desa Indah, Kg Sungai Api, Kg Pyon, Kg Jawa 1 & 2, Kg Sin Kan Kee, Kg Gelam, Kg Air and Kg Bokara were also affected. The normal operation of the plant resumed a few hours after the notice was circulated to the public. The spokesperson said this was the third time the Bukit Garam Plant's operations had been temporarily halted this month due to pump problems, with similar incidents occurring on January 5th and 19th. In addition to the pump problem, water production was also reduced on January 17th due to low water levels in the Kinabatangan River.\Regarding a complaint from a Taman Melrose user who claimed that a lack of manpower caused delays in repairs, the spokesperson denied the matter. Our record checks show that the department was not informed about the lack of supply in the area. If informed, tanker trucks would have been sent to supply treated water to users, they emphasized. In this regard, the department's technicians have been instructed to conduct periodic inspections to ensure the water supply to the premises is stable
