The spread of Koi Herpesvirus (KHV) affecting tagal fish in rivers within Tambunan, Keningau and Tenom is now under control, with investigations underway to determine the source of the outbreak, potentially linked to cross-border river flow.

KOTA KINABALU: The situation regarding the Koi Herpesvirus ( KHV ) outbreak impacting tagal fish in several rivers within the Tambunan , Keningau , and Tenom districts is currently under control, according to Agriculture , Fisheries and Food Industry Minister Datuk Jamawi Jaafar . He reported that, following rigorous monitoring and control measures implemented by the Sabah Fisheries Department over the past two months, no new fish deaths have been documented.

This positive development offers reassurance to local communities and highlights the effectiveness of the rapid response from governmental agencies. The focus now shifts towards preventing any recurrence of the outbreak and thoroughly investigating its origins to mitigate future risks.\The initial detection of the KHV outbreak prompted swift action from the Sabah Fisheries Department. Upon receiving reports from tagal operators regarding unusual fish mortality, the department promptly dispatched officers to collect samples from the affected rivers. Laboratory analysis subsequently confirmed that the deaths were indeed caused by KHV. Since December, officers have been actively engaged in close monitoring of the river systems, implementing various control measures aimed at containing the virus. These measures have included, but are not limited to, restrictions on fish movement to prevent further spread and public advisories. Datuk Jamawi Jaafar emphasized that the situation remains under control and that no new cases have been reported, further bolstering public confidence in the ongoing management of the situation. The minister's statement at the United Sabah Islamic Organisation (Usia)'s Ramadan Programme Coordination Meeting in Kota Kinabalu on Monday served to keep the public informed and updated on the matter. \The source of the KHV outbreak is still being investigated, with the Sabah Fisheries Department exploring multiple potential causes. One area of concern being investigated is the possibility of cross-border contamination, specifically through river flow from Kalimantan, Indonesia. The Padas River, which has its origin in Kalimantan, flows into the Pegalan River and eventually into the interior of Sabah, raising concerns that the virus may have been transmitted through this waterway. Datuk Jamawi Jaafar acknowledged this possibility, noting that a KHV case was reported in Kalimantan last year. However, he also stressed that there is no confirmed evidence yet to link the current outbreak to a cross-border source, emphasizing that the matter remains under thorough investigation. In the meantime, precautionary measures remain in place. Fish from the affected areas are deemed safe for human consumption, a message that has been repeatedly communicated to the public to prevent unnecessary panic. The primary focus is now on determining the origin of the outbreak while continuing to monitor and contain the virus. Furthermore, a concerted effort is being made to inform and educate the public about the ongoing situation and the measures being taken to safeguard the local fish populations and the health of the community. The swift and decisive actions taken by the authorities are a testament to their dedication to protect the state's natural resources and public safety
