Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) pledged to work with Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung to address the issue of 45 landlords collectively owing RM8.5 million in electricity charges due to illegal Bitcoin mining conducted by their tenants. TNB reminded property owners to submit Change of Tenancy (COT) applications and offered assistance via its Careline Facebook page and phone hotline.
Tenaga Nasional Berhad ( TNB ) announced today that it will reach out to Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung to develop a solution for numerous landlords who collectively owe RM8.5 million in electricity charges due to illegal Bitcoin mining conducted by their tenants. TNB stressed that the public can seek assistance through its 24-hour operational TNB Careline Facebook page or by phone at 1-300-88-5454 (available Monday to Friday from 8am to 7pm, and weekends/public holidays from 8am to 5pm).
In a statement to Malay Mail, TNB urged property owners to submit a Change of Tenancy (COT) application whenever a new tenant occupies their premises. This measure, TNB explained, can help prevent future disputes or liabilities concerning the electricity account. The news comes after 45 homeowners and business operators incurred losses totaling RM8.5 million in electricity charges after their tenants allegedly used their identities to engage in illegal Bitcoin mining. The victims only discovered the illicit activities after receiving notices from TNB, leaving many financially strained and emotionally distressed. In response, Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung urged TNB to establish a task force to investigate illegal Bitcoin mining. Lee, who intends to raise the issue in Parliament, emphasized the importance of fairness and shared responsibility among property owners, tenants, and electricity providers
