The first segment of Penang's Mutiara LRT line is set to cost at least RM8.31 billion, with construction beginning soon. The contract for the first package was signed today, with the project expected to be completed in several phases.
The first segment of Penang’s Mutiara LRT line will cost at least RM8.31 billion, Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced today. The contract for package 1 was signed by MRT Corporation with SRS Consortium, a joint venture involving Gamuda Bhd, Loh Phoy Yen Holdings Sdn Bhd, and Ideal Property Development Sdn Bhd. This segment will cover 29.5km of viaduct from Penang South Reclamation Island -A (PSR-A) to Komtar, including 19 stations.
The second package will be the civil main contract for Segment 2, which extends the alignment from Macallum to Penang Sentral on Seberang Prai, covering 6km. This includes a 3.2km sea-crossing bridge. The tender for Segment 2 is expected to begin in the third quarter of this year. The third package, the Systems Turnkey Contract (STC), encompasses the design, procurement, construction, testing, commissioning, and maintenance of railway systems. The tender for package 3 opened on December 13, 2024. Submissions are due by April 14 this year. The Mutiara LRT line will have three interchange stations, Komtar being one. The other two will be at Macallum and Penang Sentral. The line will feature over 1,000 car parking bays and over 1,000 motorcycle parking bays. Passenger capacity will be 405 passengers per train car, with a train frequency of four minutes in the initial years. The trains will be driverless electric trains with Grade of Automation 3.
