Residents of Taman Teluk Pulai are protesting against MBDK's plan to build a flood retention pond on a neighborhood park, arguing that recent flooding has been effectively mitigated by existing drain maintenance efforts.
Residents of Taman Teluk Pulai are voicing their strong opposition to a plan by the Klang Royal City Council ( MBDK ) to construct a flood retention pond on the site of a popular neighborhood park and playground. A signboard put up by MBDK announcing the project has ignited anger among residents, who argue that the area has not experienced significant flooding issues recently.
They point to MBDK's efforts in cleaning and desilting monsoon drains as the reason for the improvement in flood mitigation. Santokh Singh, chairman of the Teluk Pulai Residents Association, expressed his surprise at not being informed about the retention pond plan. He recalled that during the December 2021 floods, Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari visited Taman Melawis, a low-lying area prone to flooding next to Taman Teluk Pulai, and announced allocations for a flood mitigation plan. However, Santokh emphasized that excluding a few houses nearby, Taman Teluk Pulai residents have not faced severe flooding since the drain maintenance work commenced. On January 10th, residents met with MBDK's Engineering Department officers to voice their protest against the pond plan. They expressed concerns about potential negative health, safety, and comfort impacts for residents. Santokh highlighted that the representative from the consulting company involved couldn't even provide proof of their 'overall feasibility study' for the retention pond. He stressed that if the drain maintenance continues as scheduled, there should be no flooding concerns in the area. Santokh also pointed out that MBDK is already constructing a flood retention pond in Jalan Serampang 1 within Taman Teluk Pulai. He informed their zone area councillor, Chris Lee, that maintaining drainage systems was a more effective initiative for flood mitigation. Other residents echoed similar sentiments, criticizing MBDK for erecting the signboard without prior consultation. Rajinder Singh, 63, expressed annoyance at the lack of communication and urged MBDK to conduct a thorough study to identify the root cause of water flow issues in low-lying Lorong Sepat 5 instead of assuming a retention pond would be the solution. Gan Tiong Eng, 71, criticized the lack of transparency in the decision-making process, emphasizing the need for resident input. He highlighted the importance of addressing the differing water levels in various parts of the neighborhood. S. Gunarasa, 80, shared his concern about the impact on the existing park and playground, which was a major reason for him purchasing his house in the area. When contacted, Lee indicated his willingness to bring up the residents' concerns with the city council if the majority oppose the retention pond plan. MBDK Corporate Communications Department director Norfiza Mahfiz stated that the council would await a comment from the Engineering Department director regarding this matter
