Party says it will support PBS to ensure victory for Gabungan Bersatu Sabah.
KOTA KINABALU: Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku has decided not to contest in the Sandakan parliamentary by-election and will throw its weight behind Parti Bersatu Sabah , its partner in the opposition bloc Gabungan Bersatu Sabah .
STAR president Jeffrey Kitingan said the decision was made after a series of discussions, including with PBS president Maximus Ongkili. “I confirm that we won’t be contesting in the by-election so to give way to our partner in GBS,” he said in a statement today.He said Liew, who is the Tanjung Papat division chief, has accepted the party’s decision.
Liew said she respected the decision and appealed to her supporters not to be discouraged and to vote for the GBS candidate instead.STAR secretary-general Guandee Kohoi said the party had named Liew as its candidate because it believed she had a “strong chance” of wresting the seat from Pakatan Harapan.Ongkili earlier today announced that PBS will be vying for the Sandakan seat but has yet to name a candidate, who will be chose from “a long list of potential names”.
The constituency has 39,777 voters, 49% of whom are Chinese, 44% Muslim Bumiputera and 6% non-Muslim Bumiputera.
