Sasha Masakowski will be backed by her brother Martin and father, acclaimed guitarist Steve Masakowski, at the Black Cat nightclub in S.F.

Born and raised in the Crescent City, she was weaned on music at home with her parents, German concert pianist Ulrike Antonie Sprenger and jazz guitarist Steve Masakowski. She came of age in the New Orleans scene and has earned a sterling reputation as a multifarious creative force, working as a singer, sound designer, and songwriter eager to build on the region’s tradition of innovation.

A New Orleans institution who’s retiring from teaching after more than three decades as head of the jazz program at the University of New Orleans, “he’s finally free to tour again and I’m bringing him out on the road,” she said. “My little brother is a fantastic bass player and luthier who builds his own basses. He also plays recorder, flute, and a bunch of different woodwinds.”

“It started directly after Katrina when we started playing at Club 300 in the French Quarter. At that time it was more of a learning experience for my kids. I gave them a lot of direction. Now the tables have turned and they’ve left me in the dust.” When she did dive into jazz, she plunged head first into deep waters, gaining attention in the wild and wooly improv combo Free Jazz, Brah! “I’d jump on the rafters and be screaming, using all these weird vocal effects and props,” she recalled. “I think my love for improvising came hand in hand with my love for jazz. I could express myself as a horn player. Having come from a musical theater background, it was so freeing.
