This is Doillon’s second pregnancy, and she’s approaching maternity wear differently than she did 20 years ago at 19.

Lou Doillon attended the Gucci resort 2023 show in Puglia, Italy last week wearing a long jacket from the Italian House that was barely buttoned to reveal a growing baby bump. The singer, artist, and perpetual muse, who is seven months pregnant, looked breathtaking and full of life. The look couldn’t have been more Doillon; laissez-faire style is in her blood, thanks to her mother, Jane Birkin. Her artfully crinkled wide-brimmed hat is symbolic of Doillon’s philosophy.

“I think that I spent a majority of my pregnancy in either military overalls or for farmers,” says Doillon over the phone from Paris. Instead, she’s experimenting during this pregnancy at 39. For instance, she’s taken her old pajama bottoms and added her classic suspenders to them: not for style, but for practicality. “I've just been able to wear all of my old pajamas where the elastic had gone really loose and just hold them with suspenders and get away with it.

Instead of all-enveloping dresses, Doillon has been embracing the bare-it-all philosophy championed by Rihanna, sartorially but also emotionally. Doillon believes that the singer’s visible pregnancy has been helpful in celebrating womanhood in all of its forms. Rihanna made headlines wearing a sheer babydoll dress to the Dior show and announcing her pregnancy in an unbuttoned Chanel jacket, flipping the script on the traditional “tent dress” maternity fashion.

While she’s having fun with her clothing, these outfits are more than just a bold style statement to Doillon. The artist lives in France, but the threat toin the United States has become a global conversation. At a time when women’s reproductive rights are being threatened, she sees visible, joyful pregnancies as a celebration of choice and agency. “It was very refreshing. I think it has to do with accepting the female body and [is] a form of activism,” she says.
