Shark nets will be put back in place along the New South Wales coast next month, despite widespread opposition from conservationists and local councils.
The nets, which will be reinstalled at 51 beaches between Newcastle and Wollongong on September 1, are designed to protect beachgoers from several life-threatening shark species, The Daily Telegraph reports.
Waverley Mayor Paula Masselos, whose electorate includes Bondi Beach, argues there are better ways to protect swimmers, however NSW Premier Chris Minns said there is no more effective shark deterrent measure. “We’re not in a position at the moment where we can say hand on heart for this coming summer that these new technologies are as good a replacement as shark nets for Sydney beaches,” Mr Minns said on Monday.“I don’t think the work will be done in enough time for summer particularly when you consider the nets need to be rolled out in September.”
"Every beach where a net is installed already has alternative, shark safety measures in place such as SMART drumlines, alert systems and drone surveillance," the Humane Society International Australia said in a statement.
