It comes after the state government decided to re-install the nets on multiple beaches.

"I think that the next step now is for coastal mayors to meet with the ministers on a round table and actually look at what we can do," she said."You can't just rip out the shark nets without actually having an education campaign around, you know, what people should be doing in the water," Masselos said.

"So I think it's really important that people are aware you don't swim at dawn and dusk when you can't see what's in the water."If there are lots of fish in the water, get out, because you don't know what is actually going to be in there chasing them." She called on the government to take a "scientific approach" to the issue and include academics in the process.

"I would certainly like to see a blueprint of action and I think that with all the research that is there now, it's time," she said.The state's shark nets cover 51 beaches between Newcastle and Wollongong., the government warns that the nets do not provide a total protective barrier. Since they were first installed in 1937, there have been 36 "unprovoked shark interactions" at NSW beaches with nets, including one death.
