SFPD Traffic Unit officers will conduct DUI saturation patrols beginning Friday at 7 p.m. and ending Saturday at 3 a.m., according to a department statement.

The San Francisco Police Department announced on Wednesday that it will increase patrols of officers searching for intoxicated drivers ahead of the holiday weekend.

"Recent statistics reveal that 30% of drivers in fatal crashes had one or more drugs in their systems," police reported in a statement."A study of active drivers showed more tested positive for drugs... than did for alcohol. Of the drugs, marijuana was most prevalent, at 8% percent." Funding for the operation was provided to the SFPD by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
