Following a shooting at a shopping mall in Setia Alam, Malaysia's Home Affairs Minister, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, emphasized the stringent process of obtaining a firearm licence, stating that it can take years to complete and involves thorough vetting.
Home Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has assured the public that obtaining a firearm licence remains a complex and rigorous process that takes years to complete. According to Saifuddin, for every 100 applications, only a maximum of three licences are approved. 'On one hand, I receive feedback questioning why the process takes so long — sometimes one to two years — but this itself reflects how thorough the screening process is,' he stated.
The minister's remarks follow a shooting incident at a shopping mall in Setia Alam, where a local man in his 30s with a history of criminal offences shot and injured a male janitor over the weekend. The applications undergo multiple layers of scrutiny. 'One level of screening is conducted by Bukit Aman, and another by the ministry,' he explained. Further elaborating on approvals, Saifuddin revealed that since assuming his position in December 2022, he has only approved three out of every 100 appeals that were initially denied by the police.
