A prominent lawyer in Selangor is facing serious allegations of domestic abuse spanning a decade from his wife. The accusations include physical violence, psychological manipulation, and threats. The lawyer allegedly used coercive tactics, including locking his wife in a room, to force her to sign divorce papers. This led to her jumping from the second floor of their terrace house in an attempt to escape, resulting in severe injuries that have lasting effects even after six months of recovery.
The victim, a businesswoman in her 30s, spoke publicly about her experience with the help of Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng. She revealed that she endured multiple instances of domestic violence throughout their marriage, with their 10-year-old child also being subjected to violence on several occasions while trying to intervene. While her husband had previously proposed divorce, she refused to sign his unfair agreement, hoping to maintain a family for their child. In early March last year, he again tried to force her to sign, locking her in a room, verbally abusing her, and throwing her phone from the second floor. When cornered on the second-floor balcony, she jumped out of fear, sustaining two fractured vertebrae, a broken leg, and requiring steel plates in her back. Confined to a wheelchair for six months, she received no care from her husband during her hospital stay, who only continued pressuring her for divorce. Upon her discharge in late March, she and her child hastily vacated their shared residence, leaving behind personal belongings. She had previously hesitated to speak publicly but has now decided to pursue legal action. Her legal representative stated that the accused was arrested by police on January 18th and released on bail the following day. Authorities have initiated investigations under Penal Code Section 323 and 506, dealing with voluntary causing hurt and criminal intimidation respectively. Legal experts advise victims of domestic violence to seek help and protection. Under the Domestic Violence Act 1994, victims are legally protected. They can report the abuse to the police, who can initiate investigations that may lead to the arrest and detention of perpetrators. This story was adapted from a report by Oriental Daily.
