A seamstress' assistant in Johor Bahru was fined RM4,000 at the Sessions Court today for making seditious comments against the Yang di-Pertuan Agong last December.

A seamstress' assistant in Johor Bahru was fined RM4,000 at the Sessions Court today for making seditious comments against the Yang di-Pertuan Agong last December. Judge Datuk Ahmad Kamal Arifin Ismail imposed the sentence after the accused, Norli Mohamed Yusof, 53, pleaded guilty to the charge. He also ordered the accused to be jailed for six months if she fails to pay the fine.

According to the charge, Norli was accused of publishing a post on her Facebook account, Nori Norli, with seditious words intended to bring into contempt the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in Bandar Seri Alam, around 2 pm on December 11 last year. She was charged under Section 4(1)(c) of the Sedition Act 1948, which carries a maximum fine of RM5,000, a maximum jail term of three years, or both, upon conviction. According to the facts of the case, a complainant saw a post with a picture on a Facebook account showing the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, together with the Regent of Johor, Tunku Mahkota Ismail, and Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, having lunch at a asam pedas restaurant in Johor Bahru. The complainant noticed that the owner of the Facebook account, Nori Norli, which was the accused, had posted a comment that was considered seditious and had a tendency to incite hatred against the Yang di-Pertuan Agong before lodging a police report at the Seri Alam police station. An investigation and surveillance by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) found that the Facebook account Nori Norli was registered under the phone number of the accused's daughter, and the investigation confirmed that the Facebook account was operated by the accused. The prosecution of the case was handled by the Johor State Director of Prosecution, Abdul Ghafar Abdul Latif, and Deputy Public Prosecutor, Lydia Salleh, while the accused was represented by lawyers from the Yayasan Bantuan Guaman Kebangsaan (YBGK), K. Bharathi and P. Rajagunaseelan. Earlier, the lawyers pleaded for the accused to be given the minimum fine considering that the mother of five children pleaded guilty and worked as a seamstress' assistant with a salary of between RM400 and RM500 per month, while her husband worked as a stall assistant with a salary of between RM800 and RM1,000 per month. However, the prosecution requested the court to impose a commensurate sentence because the offence committed by the accused was very serious, involving insults against the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, as a lesson for other social media users
