A syndicate operating at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) bribed enforcement officers to illegally transport vape products, according to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (SPRM). The investigation led to the arrest of 14 individuals, including six customs officers, involved in the scheme.
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (SPRM) has uncovered a sophisticated smuggling ring operating at Kuala Lumpur International Airport ( KLIA ) that involves bribing enforcement officers to illegally transport vape products. According to SPRM Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, the syndicate offers bribes ranging from RM150 for a one-ton lorry to RM750 for lorries exceeding five tons.
Based on the estimated 20 lorries exiting the KLIA Free Trade Zone (FCZ) daily, the estimated daily bribe amount could reach between RM4,000 and RM6,000.Azam Baki revealed that the syndicate's modus operandi involves bribing enforcement officers with substantial sums of money to bypass inspections and scans. In a recent operation, 14 individuals, including six customs officers, eight civilians, and six company directors, were arrested between 8 pm and 1 am on Wednesday (January 17) in the Klang Valley and Putrajaya. The arrested individuals are suspected of being part of this organized smuggling ring. Six customs officers, four company directors, and two civilians have been remanded for four days until January 25. Another company director was remanded for five days until January 26, while another company director was released on SPRM bail. The investigation is ongoing and further arrests are expected
