Datuk Seri Christina Liew, Sabah's Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, met with the Japanese Ambassador to Malaysia, Shikata Noriyuki, to request the lifting of the travel advisory prohibiting Japanese citizens from visiting the islands off Sabah's east coast. She emphasized Sabah's safety and the significant improvements in security measures since past incidents.
Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew has requested the Japan ese government to further review the travel advisory barring its citizens from visiting the islands on Sabah ’s east coast. She made this request when the Ambassador of Japan to Malaysia, Shikata Noriyuki, paid a courtesy call on her early this week.
Liew expressed her hope that the Japanese government will completely lift the travel ban, highlighting that Sabah is a safe destination and the kidnapping incident involving Sipadan Island occurred over 20 years ago. She mentioned that last year, foreign ambassadors were impressed by the security measures put in place by the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) during a security survey of the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (Esszone). Shikata acknowledged the minister's efforts in promoting tourism and expressed hope for more Japanese tourists to visit Sabah under her leadership. He emphasized the need for greater publicity on Sabah with additional information for Japanese citizens to better understand the regional landscape and current events in the state. The ambassador also advocated for academic collaboration, encouraging more Sabah students to study in Japan and vice versa, particularly at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS). Liew stressed the importance of Japan as a partner in trade and tourism, which is recovering post-pandemic. She proposed Japan's investment in Sabah's frozen seafood industry and enhanced cultural exchange. Both parties believe the goal of increasing tourist numbers to Sabah and Japan is achievable through the revival of flights from Kota Kinabalu to Tokyo and Kota Kinabalu to Narita. They welcomed the news of the flight from Kota Kinabalu to Haneda resuming on February 24 after a long hiatus. Shikata also expressed his support for Japanese travel agencies operating in Sabah, noting the previous existence of one that ceased operations due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The meeting concluded with the shared belief that closer ties between Sabah and Japan can be fostered through increased tourism, trade, and cultural exchange.
