Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has called for continuous monitoring of disaster preparedness by the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) as floods affect 22 districts in Sabah and Sarawak.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has urged the National Disaster Management Agency ( NADMA ), serving as the secretariat of the Central Disaster Management Committee ( JPBP ), to continuously monitor the preparedness levels of all participating agencies in facing potential disasters.

He expressed satisfaction with the effective coordination demonstrated by District Disaster Management Committees (JPBD) and State Disaster Management Committees (JPBN) in Sabah and Sarawak in response to the ongoing flood situation. Ahmad Zahid, who also chairs the JPBP, emphasized the importance of early preparations and coordination in mitigating the impact of disasters. He highlighted that the government has allocated initial funds to all states and response agencies for operations during the 2024/2025 Northeast Monsoon season (MTL). This includes ensuring that temporary evacuation centers are equipped with adequate basic facilities for flood victims. Furthermore, he requested that NADMA expedite the registration and verification process for flood victims to prevent delays in the disbursement of Bantuan Wang Ihsan (BWI) cash assistance. The Federal Government, subject to NADMA's specified conditions, will provide RM1,000 in cash aid to heads of households (KIR) affected by floods and relocated to temporary evacuation centers (PPS). According to the National Disaster Control Centre (NDCC) portal, as of 4.45 pm today, 22 districts in Sabah and Sarawak have been affected by floods, impacting 15,004 victims who are currently sheltered in 85 PPS. The three worst-affected districts in Sarawak are Bintulu (4,811 victims), Serian (2,597 victims), and Selangau (1,056 victims). In Sabah, five districts have been affected, with 14 PPS opened, sheltering 1,702 victims from Pitas, Lahad Datu, Paitan, Beaufort, and Beluran. Meanwhile, Kota Marudu, Kota Belud, and Telupid in Sabah were declared flood-free today, allowing affected residents to return home. The public is reminded to prioritize safety by preparing an emergency bag, immediately evacuating to designated PPS upon instruction, moving to higher and safer ground, and ensuring children do not play in floodwaters
