Four policemen in Taman Seri Astana near Sungai Petani suffered injuries after being slashed with a machete during an arrest attempt yesterday. The incident occurred around 3pm when police responded to reports of a man acting erratically. Upon arriving at the scene, they found the 32-year-old suspect barricaded inside a locked house. Despite attempts to persuade him to surrender peacefully, the suspect became aggressive, wielding a machete.
Police opened fire in self-defense as the suspect charged at them, fatally wounding him. The suspect was pronounced dead at Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital (HSAH) at 1.04am today. Two younger officers, in their 20s, were treated and discharged from the hospital, while two older officers, in their 40s and 50s, remain in stable condition. The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder. Witnesses reported seeing the suspect chasing police officers with the machete, swinging it at one officer before retreating into his house. Residents assisted the injured officers before they were transported to HSAH. Another witness stated that the suspect, while previously known as a quiet individual, had been increasingly withdrawn and it is believed that he had stopped taking his medication, leading to his aggressive outburst.
