Forty to fifty individuals, believed to be family members of detainees held under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (SOSMA), gathered and staged a hunger strike outside Sungai Buloh Prison yesterday morning, demanding the government abolish the act. Police opened an investigation paper and are identifying participants for questioning.

Police have launched an investigation into a gathering and hunger strike held by several individuals, believed to be family members of detainees under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 ( SOSMA ), in front of Sungai Buloh Prison yesterday morning. Sungai Buloh District Police Chief Supt Mohd Hafiz Muhammad Nor said his team detected the assembly around 8:10 am and found 40 to 50 individuals, including children, gathering at the location while holding banners.

'Initial investigations revealed that the purpose of the gathering was to urge the government to abolish the SOSMA Act. The participants are also believed to have family members who are being detained at Sungai Buloh Prison under the said act,' he said in a statement today. Following this, Mohd Hafiz said his team had opened an investigation paper under Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, and individuals involved in the assembly are being identified to be recorded as witnesses in the near future. He said the organizers of the gathering risk being fined up to RM10,000 if they do not submit a notice to the police to hold the gathering. Members of the public who have information about the incident are requested to contact the investigating officer Insp Nurliyana Shariffuddin at 010-8435654 or the nearest police station. Media yesterday reported that several family members of SOSMA detainees began a hunger strike outside Sungai Buloh Prison as a form of protest after their visitation requests were denied, as well as urging the government to abolish the act.
