Health Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, stated that on average, one in five adults in Malaysia suffers from diabetes.
However, he expressed concern that a majority remain unaware of their condition, increasing their risk of developing serious health complications in the future.Apart from diabetes, Penang also faces a higher prevalence of obesity at 56.5% compared to the national average of 54.4%. Furthermore, Dr Dzulkefly noted a significant number of Malaysians with elevated cholesterol levels, with one in three individuals, approximately 33.3%, affected compared to 37.4% in Penang. Another concerning statistic is the high prevalence of hypertension, with one in three Malaysians, or 29.2%, diagnosed, compared to 35.4% in Penang.These alarming figures were highlighted during the Official Opening and Open House of the Wellness Hub Seberang Perai Utara (SPU) at Sungai Dua Health Clinic. The SPU Wellness Hub, costing over RM1 million, is one of 33 Wellness Hubs established nationwide. During a press conference, Dr Dzulkefly announced the Ministry of Health's (MoH) plan to develop and upgrade nine more Wellness Hubs this year, at a projected cost of up to RM7 million, with each hub costing approximately RM800,000 to RM1 million. These hubs will be strategically located in both urban and rural areas, aligning with the MoH's vision of achieving 'one district, one Wellness Hub' in the future
