Penang authorities seized goods worth RM3.31 million last year due to violations of price control and consumer protection laws. The state director of the ministry attributed the success to public information and confirmed that coconut prices remain stable despite a global rise.

State director S.Jegan said the goods were confiscated during statewide inspections on 52,473 business premises. Throughout last year, we recorded seizures worth RM3.31 million involving 724 cases under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011, the Consumer Protection Act 1999, and the Weights and Measures Act 1972, among others.

Penang KPDN also issued compounds totalling RM385,450 against traders for various offences during the same period,” he told reporters on Thursday (Jan 9) at the ministry’s storage complex in Bukit Minyak here. He attributed the success of these operations to the public who consistently provided information on violations among traders. Meanwhile, Jegan said their monitoring found that the prices of coconuts, coconut milk, and grated coconut across the state remain under control and stable despite an increase in coconut prices. He said the rise in prices of coconuts from Indonesia was due to high demand from Thailand, which has led to higher prices in Penang, adding that coconuts are priced at RM2.29 each at the importer level.
