Following its historic victory in the 2022 general election , securing 43 parliamentary seats, the party, founded in 1951, now faces the daunting task of charting its leadership course ahead of the next general election . PAS has undergone a long evolution, starting as an ulama organization under the wing of UMNO. From the era of Dr.
Burhanuddin al-Helmy's Malay-Islamic nationalism to Ustaz Yusof Rawa's introduction of the 'ulama leadership' concept, and then to the modernization era under the late Datuk Fadzil Noor and Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, PAS has demonstrated resilience and adaptability. Now, under the leadership of Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, PAS has achieved electoral success, but the party faces a new dilemma. Abdul Hadi's declining health has sparked debate about the need for a smooth and planned leadership transition. The primary question is: who will take the reins and lead PAS into the next era? Several names have been proposed as potential successors, including Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, Prof. Datuk Dr. Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, Datuk Dr. Mohamed Fadzli Hassan, Datuk Moh. However, the party also needs to consider the need for fresh air in leadership. Dr. Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar represents a new generation of PAS leadership with a technocrat background. As the Menteri Besar of Terengganu, he has demonstrated his ability to combine Islamic values with modern administration. His success in governing Terengganu has drawn attention from many who see him as a model for PAS's future leadership.The biggest challenge for PAS is not just choosing a new leader, but also determining its direction in Malaysia's increasingly complex political landscape. PAS must also confront the reality that Malaysia's political landscape is evolving. Today's young voters have different expectations of political leadership. They want a party that not only adheres to Islamic principles but is also capable of providing practical solutions to current issues such as the cost of living, job opportunities, and economic development. PAS's success in the 2022 election proved that the party is capable of garnering support beyond its traditional base. However, to sustain this momentum, the party needs to undertake significant internal reforms. This includes empowering the party's youth wing, increasing women's participation in leadership, and developing more inclusive policies. The upcoming party elections are not just about choosing a new president, but about determining PAS's identity and direction for the coming decades. The party needs to strike a balance between upholding its fundamental principles as an Islamic party and the need to transform into a national party capable of attracting support from diverse segments of society.The main challenge for PAS's new leadership will be to ensure the party remains relevant in contemporary Malaysian politics while preserving its Islamic identity. This requires leadership that is not only knowledgeable in Islamic matters but also competent in modern administration and economic development.
