On the sideline no more, North Olmsted City School District students with intellectual disabilities are joining the team this fall.

“We’re super excited about Unified Sports in North Olmsted,” Pupil Services Coordinator Jacquelyn Kelly said. “It’s a way to get all of our students included, involved and have camaraderie.

Unified Sports provides a fully inclusive team sports program that combines equal numbers of students with intellectual disabilities and students without intellectual disabilities on sports teams for training and competition. This year North Olmsted City Schools will be offering flag football, cheerleading, soccer, basketball, track, cornhole and kickball at the middle school and high school.“A lot of our students have never been exposed to some specific sports like flag football,” she said. “We’ll be playing seven on seven games that still have a competitive nature.

The middle school team recently traveled to Strongsville for flag football with the high school squad planning a Cloverleaf visit.“This year we’re with mostly Medina County schools just because they’re new too, so it’s kind of nice that we start off small.”
