US President Donald Trump speaks to the press before signing a proclamation renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America aboard Air Force One, as it flies over the Gulf enroute to New Orleans, Louisiana on Febrary 09, 2025. For years, as disputes over names on the map riled up nationalist passions in several parts of the world, US policymakers have watched warily, trying to stay out or to quietly encourage peace.

During his three weeks in office the president has unleashed a flurry of executive orders aimed at slashing federal spending. He has appointed SpaceX and Tesla boss Musk to lead his federal cost-cutting efforts under the so-called Department of Government Efficiency . In the interview, Trump claimed there was “hundreds of millions of dollars of money that’s going to places where it shouldn’t be going.”

Since taking office, Trump has characterized billions of dollars in daily bilateral trade as a US “subsidy” and claimed without evidence that Canada would not be “a viable country” without it.

Dutch Police Arrest Hundreds of Climate Activists After Highway BlockageHundreds of climate activists were arrested by Dutch police after a protest organized by Extinction Rebellion (XR) blocked a major highway leading to The Hague for several hours. The demonstration was part of a series of previous protests against Dutch fossil fuel subsidies and to raise awareness about the effects of climate change. Police say 700 activists were detained during the protest on Highway A12, causing traffic congestion and delaying emergency services. The protest site was heavily guarded with police on foot, horseback, and using drones. Participants ignored orders from police and city officials to remain in Malieveld, a large open space in the city center, and not enter the nearby highway. They carried banners and placards with messages such as 'We believe in a life after oil' while waving XR flags before moving onto the road. Police eventually used water cannons to disperse the participants who were sitting on the main road before making arrests.
