Hundreds of climate activists were arrested by Dutch police after a protest organized by Extinction Rebellion (XR) blocked a major highway leading to The Hague for several hours. The demonstration was part of a series of previous protests against Dutch fossil fuel subsidies and to raise awareness about the effects of climate change. Police say 700 activists were detained during the protest on Highway A12, causing traffic congestion and delaying emergency services. The protest site was heavily guarded with police on foot, horseback, and using drones. Participants ignored orders from police and city officials to remain in Malieveld, a large open space in the city center, and not enter the nearby highway. They carried banners and placards with messages such as 'We believe in a life after oil' while waving XR flags before moving onto the road. Police eventually used water cannons to disperse the participants who were sitting on the main road before making arrests.
