An Indigenous performer who attacked a footy fan with a didgeridoo outside the Melbourne Cricket Ground has been sentenced to less than 10 months behind bars.
"We're lucky we're coming here today and not the cemetery because that's how close it was with Daniel," Ierado's grandfather Robert allingham told 9News.
After the match, Gardiner went after Ierado, bashing him with a didgeridoo in what police called an unprovoked attack. But during the hearing in the Koori court at Dandenong Magistrates' Court today, Gardiner claimed another man was being racially abused. The court heard Ierado needed six months to recover from a fractured skull and eye socket, bleeding on the brain and a broken nose. While on bail, Gardiner hit another man on the back of the head with an extendable baton at the Albion Hotel in Dandenong.
