Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim revealed plans to revitalize Langkawi's tourism industry after the island lagged behind Thailand in attracting Malaysian travelers.
Ever since travel restrictions were lifted post-pandemic, many Malaysia ns are choosing to travel overseas for holidays, especially to Thailand , rather than domestically. In 2023, Malaysia ns topped the charts for foreign travelers to Thailand with 4,626,422 visitors. This year is on track to surpass that number, with 4,506,898 Malaysia n tourists visiting Thailand in the first 11 months of 2024 alone. 500,000 Malaysia ns are expected to visit Thailand in December 2023 alone.
Tourist destinations in Malaysia, like Langkawi Island, seem to be lagging behind their Thai counterparts. To address this, the Malaysian Government will take immediate steps. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced on his official Facebook account that he had a meeting with the CEO of Langkawi Development Authority (LADA), the district officer, and the Langkawi district police chief to discuss stimulating growth and enhancing the Langkawi tourism sector. He emphasized that these initiatives will be implemented while preserving the island’s biodiversity. Additionally, Anwar revealed plans to expedite various initiatives to benefit the Langkawi local community, including establishing a university branch
