Malaysia and Uzbekistan have emphasized the significance of strengthening their bilateral ties and have expressed a shared commitment to elevate their relationship to a strategic partnership in the future. This declaration was made in a joint statement released on Wednesday during Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev's two-day official visit to Malaysia .

Both nations agreed to work collaboratively on enhancing bilateral trade and comprehensive cooperation across various key areas of mutual interest. This collaborative effort is anticipated to yield tangible benefits for the citizens of both countries. The joint statement highlighted the importance of maintaining regular communication, consultations, and close coordination at various levels. It also emphasized the need for fostering a consistent exchange of ideas and opinions on crucial international issues, particularly within the frameworks of international organizations such as the United Nations (UN), the Organisation of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and other prominent global organizations. This commitment is further solidified by the Programme of Cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Foreign Ministry of Malaysia for 2023-2026, signed on July 4, 2023.Mirziyoyev, who is on his first visit to Malaysia since assuming office in December 2016, received an official welcome at Perdana Putra. He also engaged in a one-on-one meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who had previously visited Uzbekistan in May 2024. Mirziyoyev extended his congratulations to Anwar and reaffirmed Uzbekistan's full support for Malaysia's upcoming chairmanship of ASEAN in 2025. Malaysia reciprocated by expressing its support for Uzbekistan's aspirations to engage institutionally with ASEAN and its interest in considering accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC), recognizing its potential to further bolster regional peace and stability.Malaysia and Uzbekistan further acknowledged their active cooperation on critical issues within the ambit of international organizations, particularly the UN and the OIC. They reaffirmed their dedication to sustaining mutual support for each other's initiatives and candidatures. Both leaders underscored their support for collaborative measures, both bilateral and multilateral, aimed at countering emerging security threats and challenges, primarily those related to transnational crime, encompassing terrorism and terrorism financing, drug trafficking, illegal migration, and others. Regarding Palestine, the leaders emphasized the imperative of resolving international challenges through peaceful means, including the Palestinian cause, in full conformity with international law and relevant UN resolutions. They highlighted the importance of achieving a just and enduring solution to this challenge, ultimately fostering peace and stability in the region.The joint statement also noted the shared importance of avoiding the isolation of Afghanistan and continuing to provide assistance to the Afghan people, encompassing capacity-building and humanitarian aid. This concerted effort aims to avert a looming humanitarian crisis and enhance the lives and livelihoods of the Afghan populace
