A group of lion dance performers in Sabah, Malaysia, unexpectedly fell into a sinkhole during a Chinese New Year celebration. The incident happened in Tamparuli, leaving the performers shaken but unharmed.
A group of young performers executing a lion dance for a Chinese New Year celebration in Tamparuli, Sabah , fell through a large opening when the floor of a shop corridor unexpectedly collapsed. The incident occurred around 11 am on Wednesday, February 5th, along Jalan Bunga. Thankfully, the three individuals who fell into the nearly 1-meter-deep hole were rapidly rescued by their fellow performers and escaped without injury.
Rayner Ebi, a local resident who witnessed the event, stated that the sudden collapse shocked the audience watching the performance. He emphasized the need for immediate maintenance of essential infrastructure in the town by local authorities. Ebi, who serves as an officer at the Tuaran member of parliament's service center, pointed out that the floor issue in the area had been reported as a safety hazard to the Tuaran District Council prior to the incident. However, he acknowledged that accidents are unpredictable and this unfortunate event transpired during the lion dance performance. Ebi urged the local council to take immediate action to prevent similar incidents from happening and advised pedestrians to exercise extreme caution when traversing the affected area.
