Despite converting to Islam, ethnic Chinese converts in Terengganu continue to uphold the tradition of having a grand feast during Chinese New Year, inviting fellow converts from other faiths to celebrate together.
Even after embracing Islam , the ethnic Chinese converts in Terengganu continue to uphold the tradition of having a grand feast during the Chinese New Year . According to Berita Harian, this time-honored tradition is not just celebrated by them but extends an invitation to converts from other faiths, fostering a harmonious atmosphere and strengthening brotherhood.
For Abdul Halim Lim Abdul Rahman, 53, the feast among converts serves to solidify the close relationships within the Muslim Chinese community residing in the state. 'This gathering is held because we want the outside world to see that even though we have changed religions, we still celebrate Chinese New Year with our families,' said Abdul Halim, who works as a staff member at the Terengganu Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIDAM) Corporate Unit. 'We celebrate it within the permissible scope of Sharia law, without mixing religious practices that are prohibited in Islam,' he added. His wife, children, and other family members are equally enthusiastic and respectful of their ancestors' traditions, even though they practice a different religion. Abdul Halim highlighted that the event is also celebrated with his wife, children, and other family members who are excited and respectful of their ancestors' traditions, despite their different faiths. Meanwhile, Nur Khaalishah Shandlaysnie, 38, shared that since converting to Islam in 2018, she has celebrated Chinese New Year and the tradition of the grand feast with her fellow converts from various backgrounds. She, who is married to a local man, stated that the 'grand feast' tradition of the Chinese community during Chinese New Year has had a profound impact on her. 'I moved to Terengganu in 2017 and converted to Islam a year later. By joining the 'grand feast' with fellow converts, it has greatly helped me adapt, besides learning a lot about Islam,' she explained. 'Among the converts, many are knowledgeable and have the title of 'ustaz'. Through this tradition, I can learn a lot of new things about Islam from them,' she added
