Tan Ban Sing, a 101-year-old centenarian, celebrates Chinese New Year surrounded by his family and community, highlighting the enduring harmony and warmth of village life.

Centenarian Tan Ban Sing, 101, affectionately known as 'Pakcu Hassan,' embraced the Chinese New Year with heartfelt gratitude, surrounded by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who had converged from far and wide. 'Every year, this house comes alive again at this time of year,' he shared. 'The children and grandchildren gather, share stories, and laugh together. That alone is enough to make me happy.' However, the joyous occasion was tinged with a bittersweet undercurrent.

This marked the second year Tan celebrated the Lunar New Year without his beloved wife, Kua Yok Ting, who passed away in 2023 at the age of 96. 'When she was around, we would welcome guests together,' he reminisced. 'Now, the house feels quieter, but I am grateful that my grandchild lives next door and is always ready to help whenever I need anything.' Despite the natural decline in his sight and hearing, Tan's spirit remains undimmed. With his trusty cane, he continues to take leisurely strolls around his yard, cherishing each precious moment. Tan Ban Sing is more than just an elderly man; he embodies the enduring harmony that has characterized his village for generations. 'Here, everyone speaks in the Kelantan dialect, regardless of their race. We have always lived together in harmony,' he stated. Each Chinese New Year, his celebrations extend beyond his family, encompassing his Malay neighbors who warmly join in the festivities. For Tan, this represents the true essence of village life—a tapestry woven without divisions or barriers. He attributes his longevity to a simple yet profound philosophy: 'Life should not be burdened with anger or anxiety. If there’s a problem, stay calm. That is the key to long life,' he advised, his Kelantanese accent still strong, as if holding countless stories waiting to be shared.
