When Michaela Kalowski returned to the town her grandparents were forced from under Hitler, she discovered the powerful way their history is being remembered.
The townspeople in Wennigsen, as part of their reckoning with the atrocities that had unfolded on their home soil, decided to lay "stumbling stones" for Laya and Adolf, and to name a street after Laya.
Michaela Kalowski, left, with family John Hempton, mother Jo and brother Rick, at the Stolpersteine installed where Laya and Adolf had lived. The head of the Jewish community there was appalled: how could a victim of the Holocaust be commemorated with something that people walk on, smear with dirt or worse?
They recall the names of all kinds of people who were deported because they were "Untermenschen", sub-human: Jews, people who were disabled, Roma, Sinti, Yenish semi-nomads, communists, homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses, Christian opponents of the Nazi regime or members of the Resistance. In Wennigsen, there are only two stumbling stones — for my great-grandparents.
