Bradley Cooper has come under fire for donning 'Jewface' to play Jewish composer Leonard Bernstein in an upcoming film.

Bernstein’s children have since released a statement in support of Cooper’s portrayal of their father, saying the actor had brought “sheer open-hearted joy” to the role and they were “perfectly fine” with his use of prosthetics.

“It breaks our hearts to see any misrepresentations or misunderstandings of his efforts. It happens to be true that Leonard Bernstein had a nice, big nose. Bradley chose to use makeup to amplify his resemblance, and we’re perfectly fine with that. We’re also certain that our dad would have been fine with it as well.

Helen Mirren was at the centre of a similar"Jewface" storm when she was cast as Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir in the soon-to-be released biographical drama Golda, which is headed up by Jewish director Guy Nattiv. She added that Jewish identity and representation was “constantly” breached in film and television despite an ongoing push for more diversity and accuracy in casting.“They did nothing wrong,” Silverman said. “But collectively … there’s a problem.”
