A tip-off about the whereabouts of a fugitive who evaded police for three days while on the run near the NSW border prompted Wednesday’s deadly shootout in regionalThe saga began when Stanley Turvey was told to drop his gun as police tried to arrest him at a property in Katandra West near Shepparton on Monday, but instead, he fired a shot into the air and fled in a vehicle.

They shot the 33-year-old a short time later and first aid was provided, but he was declared dead at the scene.7NEWS understands Turvey was injured and had fled to the Ardmona home to seek shelter. The house belongs to his family friend, but someone on the property warned police that Turvey may show up there.“I can’t talk about the intelligence of what led us there, but it’s fair to say we had an indication that potentially that was one location where we might find him,” Acting Assistant Commissioner Karen Nyholm said.Immediately after Turvey fled on Monday, police pursued him but their car lost control and rolled, with the officers giving chase suffering minor injuries in the crash.

The stolen ute was recovered by police the same afternoon in Fraser St at Tatura, southwest of Shepparton.The fatal shooting will be investigated with oversight by the Professional Standards Command.
