The Guardians have a boatload of possibilities, but could they pull a switcheroo in their search for a shortstop?
Manager Terry Francona keeps saying the organization believes there’s a hitter inside Arias. Maybe there is, but right now he’s hitting .198 with seven homers and 14 RBI. Over 33% of his plate appearances have ended in strikeouts, while just 11% have resulted in walks.
He had three hits in a 7-2 loss against the Reds and struck out six straight times on Friday before his single in eighth inning started a four-run rally as the Guardians avoided a seep with a 4-1 victory in the second game. Rocchio made two costly errors against the White Sox on Aug. 6 in the ninth inning while playing third base. But at shortstop he’s looked fine.
He’s had a bit of a problem staying on the field because of shoulder problems. Freeman, hitting .261 with six RBI, just got off the 10-day injured list. Martinez and Brito are on the 40-man roster. Martinez is hitting .241 with 19 doubles, 10 homers and 66 RBI between Akron and Columbus. Brito is hitting .285 with 24 doubles, 11 homers and 57 RBI at Class A Lake County and Akron. The Guardians acquired Brito in the Nolan Jones deal with the Rockies.
Right now, Gimenez is the best shortstop in the organization. Defensively, he has excelled at second base. He plays the position like Roberto Alomar played it during his three years in Cleveland.
