Will the Guardians activate the pitcher or have him make another rehab start?
He pitched with a sore right shoulder last year when he went 15-5 with a 3.38 ERA in 32 starts. This year Quantrill said the shoulder limited him from getting the proper work in between starts.
“Cal came through his start pretty good,” said manager Terry Francona on Wednesday. “We’ll sit and talk with him Thursday ... me, Carl and the trainers about what’s next for him.If Quantrill is activated, it will be interesting to see how he’ll be used. The rotation of rookies Tanner Bibee, Gavin Williams, Logan Allen, Xzavion Curry and veteran Noah Syndergaard has pitched well since the All-Star break. Curry recently was promoted from long man to the rotation.
It’s unclear if the Guardians would send one of the rookies to Class AAA Columbus to limit their innings as they did with Allen earlier this season. Or would they put Quantrill in the bullpen to fill Curry’s role? Starters Quantrill, Shane Bieber and Triston McKenzie are on the injured list. Quantrill and Bieber were in the opening-day rotation, while McKenzie opened the year on the injured list, was activated for two starts, before returning to the IL with a sore right elbow.
Quantrill is 2-6 with a 6.45 ERA in 13 starts this season for the Guardians. His last start was July 5 against Atlanta.
