The TomTom Traffic Index 2024 reveals that George Town, the capital of Penang, has the worst traffic in Malaysia, surpassing even Kuala Lumpur.

The 14th edition of the TomTom Traffic Index, released by Netherlands-based location technology specialist TomTom, offers a fascinating glimpse into traffic trends across Malaysia in 2024. The index ranks 500 cities from 62 countries based on average travel time and congestion levels. For Malaysia, the results might come as a surprise to some.

George Town, the state capital of Penang, takes the crown for the city with the worst traffic in 2024, recording an average travel time of 26 minutes and 36 seconds per 10 kilometers and a staggering 40% congestion level. This places George Town as the highest-ranked Malaysian city on the global list at 73rd position. While many might assume that the capital city, Kuala Lumpur, would lead the pack, it didn't even make it into the top 10 worst-affected cities. In fact, Kota Bharu, the capital of Kelantan, surprisingly takes the second spot for worst traffic in Malaysia and 139th globally, with an average travel time of 22 minutes and 30 seconds per 10 kilometers. The index highlights that the variations in travel times across cities are influenced by a combination of static and dynamic factors. Static factors include fixed aspects of a city's infrastructure and planning, such as road network design, while dynamic factors encompass ever-changing conditions that impact traffic flow daily, like seasonal traffic surges.
