A new study by TomTom reveals George Town as the most congested city in Malaysia, with drivers facing significant delays. The study analyzed traffic data from 500 cities globally and highlights the impact of congestion on Malaysian cities.
George Town , Penang, has been declared the city with the worst traffic congestion in Malaysia, according to a recent study conducted by TomTom, a renowned navigation and mapping technology company based in the Netherlands. The study revealed that a driver in George Town spends an average of 26 minutes and 36 seconds navigating a mere 10 kilometers, a testament to the city's traffic woes.
This translates to a staggering 40% increase in travel time compared to free-flowing conditions, as measured by TomTom's congestion level metric. George Town's traffic woes have earned it the 45th spot on the list of most congested cities globally. The study also highlighted the significant time wasted by drivers in the city. During peak weekday hours, a 10-kilometer round trip can consume a whopping 75 hours of a driver's year, stuck in frustrating traffic jams. Kota Bharu and Ipoh emerged as the second and third most congested cities in Malaysia, respectively. Kuala Lumpur, the nation's capital, placed fifth on the list, with drivers encountering an average delay of 17 minutes and 26 seconds for a 10-kilometer journey. The TomTom Traffic Index, which formed the basis of this study, analyzed data from 500 cities across 62 countries. TomTom employed a comprehensive research method utilizing floating car data (FCD) gathered from various sources, including connected vehicles, mobile navigation apps, in-dashboard navigation devices, and managed fleet telematics. This extensive data collection provides a robust foundation for estimating traffic speed and identifying congestion patterns. It is important to note that slow average speeds do not necessarily indicate traffic congestion. Factors such as speed limits, road layouts, and infrastructure variations between cities can influence travel times. TomTom's methodology focuses on quantifying the difference between optimal traffic conditions and actual travel time, providing a precise measure of congestion
