Matt Rendell, the decorated former Fitzroy player and renowned AFL recruiter, has died. He was 64.while walking his dog. He had been on life support since arriving at hospital via ambulance.The AFL released a statement on behalf of Rendell’s wife Leonie on Wednesday afternoon.
“Matthew passed away this afternoon, after suffering a cardiac arrest Sunday morning. He did not regain consciousness. “The Rendell family would like to express gratitude towards everyone who has been supportive at this time.” The frank and gregarious Rendell, known by friends and colleagues as “Bundy” after the American professional wrestler King Kong Bundy, will be remembered as a talented and influential footballer – one of the most prominent of the last relatively successful incarnation of Fitzroy – who went on to carve out a distinctive career in recruiting at the Crows, in particular, and then Collingwood.Rendell was a popular figure among the ex-Fitzroy contingent and in recruiting circles.
