The East Coast Rail Link ( ECRL ) track segment stretching from Maran, Pahang , to Kota Bharu, Kelantan , has been successfully completed two and a half months ahead of schedule. This achievement includes the completion of both the Kota Bharu station, designed exclusively for passenger services, located in Bandar Baru Tunjong, and the Pasir Puteh station, catering to both goods and passenger transportation, situated in Cherang Tuli.
As of December, the overall progress of the ECRL project stands at 87.8%. This significant milestone is attributed to the completion of the primary rail installation. Projections indicate that both stations will be fully operational by the second quarter of 2026. Darwis, emphasizing the positive impact of this advancement, stated that it will accelerate the construction of the electrification system, signaling, and telecommunications for the 43.86 km stretch in Kelantan. The 665-km ECRL line, a crucial infrastructure project connecting the East Coast states of Kelantan, Terengganu, and Pahang to Port Klang in Selangor on the West Coast, is slated for completion in December 2026. Public transportation services are expected to commence in January 2027. The ECRL will feature electric multiple unit (EMU) trains, with the first batch anticipated to arrive by the end of 2025. Each EMU train has a capacity of 430 passengers and can reach speeds of up to 160 km/h. Additionally, the project will include two electric locomotives, which will be assembled locally. The completion of the ECRL is expected to significantly enhance connectivity and economic development along the East Coast
