DNB, Malaysia's sole 5G network operator, has become one of the first to activate 5G Advanced (5.5G) on its network, promising ultra-low latency, high throughput, and improved reliability. This technology, built upon existing 5G infrastructure, will enable a range of innovative applications for both consumers and enterprises. While currently benefiting the enterprise sector due to limited consumer smartphone support, 5G Advanced is poised to revolutionize various industries, including manufacturing, healthcare, logistics, and more.

Digi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd ( DNB ), Malaysia 's sole 5G network operator, has announced the activation of 5G Advanced , also known as 5.5G , on its network. As one of the first to enable this cutting-edge capability, DNB aims to deliver an unparalleled user experience characterized by ultra-low latency , high throughput, improved network reliability, and immersive experiences.

5G Advanced, built upon the foundation of existing 5G technology, ensures consistent and superior user experience regardless of location or time. It leverages AI and network behavior manipulation to achieve desired outcomes. DNB's network will continue to benefit from Ericsson's AI intent-based operations, further enhancing network performance. These advancements promise to elevate user experiences and pave the way for innovative consumer and enterprise applications previously unattainable with standard 5G.While 5G Advanced is currently most beneficial to the enterprise sector due to the limited availability of consumer smartphones with 5.5G support, it holds immense potential for the future. Key 5G Advanced solutions include RedCap (Reduced Capability), which extends battery life and simplifies device complexity, enabling wider use cases for wearables and industry sensors. This translates to improved IoT deployments, increased efficiencies, and more affordable innovation opportunities for businesses. Additionally, 5G Advanced introduces intent-based solutions like Automated Energy Saver, part of Ericsson's Energy Efficiency and Management subscription, to optimize energy performance. Digital Minister Gobind Singh expresses optimism that these network enhancements will accelerate 5G adoption, particularly among enterprises. He emphasizes the importance of 5G for Malaysia's digital transformation, positioning the country as a 5G leader during its ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025 and bolstering its influence on digital investments and benefits in the region. DNB CEO Datuk Azman Ismail underscores the globally recognized performance and reliability of DNB's 5G network. He states that 5G Advanced will empower enterprises across sectors like manufacturing, healthcare, logistics, oil and gas, agriculture, and tourism with advanced tools to innovate and deliver exceptional products and services.Ericsson Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh Head, David Hagerbro, confirms the activation of 5G Advanced capability on the DNB network. He highlights Ericsson's commitment to jointly develop 5G Advanced capabilities with DNB, making the network even more intelligent, efficient, and secure. He recognizes DNB's position as a global 5G leader and anticipates the 5G Advanced launch further solidifying its standing. As of December 2024, Malaysia boasts 18.2 million 5G service subscriptions, representing a 53.4% adoption rate. DNB asserts that the adoption of 5G Advanced will be crucial in driving economic growth and fostering a more interconnected society. DNB's 5G network currently covers over 80% of populated areas in Malaysia, serving customers on CelcomDigi, Maxis, U Mobile, TM, and YTL Communications
