Continuous heavy rains and landslides cause widespread flooding in Sabah and Sarawak, displacing thousands and prompting a state of emergency.
While many are celebrating Chinese New Year in their finest outfits, certain communities in Sabah and Sarawak are facing a harsh reality. Persistent downpours in multiple districts across both states have triggered widespread flooding, compounded by recent landslides. Bintulu, Serian, Samarahan, Kuching, Miri, and Sibu are among the hardest-hit areas.
Reports from China Press and Sinar Harian indicate that Sarawak hasn't experienced a flash flood of this magnitude in a decade, making the current disaster the worst in recorded history. In response to the crisis, 32 temporary evacuation centers (PPS) have been established to provide shelter for flood victims, with an additional 2 PPS dedicated to those affected by fires and landslides. A viral video circulating online depicts a residential area in Bintulu completely submerged in floodwaters, with the relentless rain continuing to pour.According to the latest data from The Malaysian Department of Social Welfare (JKM), as of January 30th, the number of flood victims in both states is steadily increasing, reaching a total of 5,767 individuals who have been evacuated from their homes. Moreover, Sarawak's Transport Minister, YB Dato' Sri Lee Kin Shin, has issued a stern warning to residents residing in mountainous regions, urging them to exercise extreme caution as the incessant heavy rains threaten to destabilize the soil, making landslides more likely. He also implored those affected to immediately contact rescue personnel to prevent any further accidents. The hopes of the nation are firmly pinned on a swift improvement in the situation in both states
